Postdoctoral Positions at NIST
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in cooperation with the National Research Council, offers awards for postdoctoral research in many areas. These awards provide a select group of scientist and engineers an opportunity for research in many of the areas that are of deep concern to the scientific and technological community of the nation. NIST, with direct responsibilities for the nation's measurement network, involves its laboratories in the most modern developments in the physical, engineering, and mathematical sciences and the technological developments that proceed from them. NIST affords great freedom and an opportunity for both interdisciplinary research and research in well-defined disciplines. While there are many areas of opportunity, there are some specifically targetting qualified individuals in the area of ontological research. Two such opportunities are described at http://www.mel.nist.gov/postdoc/msid.html#obm and http://www.mel.nist.gov/postdoc/msid.html#ttms. Please contact Steve Ray at ray@nist.gov if you would like to inquire further. Application deadlines are February 1st and August 1st of each year.
U.S. citizenship is required for these appointments.
Postdoctoral Position at IFOMIS
Institute for Formal Ontology and Medical Information Science (IFOMIS) Saarland University, Germany
Post-doctoral researcher
The Institute for Formal Ontology and Medical Information Science, Saarland University seeks applications for the above position, to be filled as soon as possible. IFOMIS is an interdisciplinary research group, with members from Philosophy, Computer and Information Science, Logic, Medicine, and Biomedical Informatics, focusing on theoretically grounded research in both formal and applied ontology. Its goal is to develop a formal ontology that will be applied and tested in the domain of medical and biomedical information science. Work on the project is carried out in English. The successful candidate will have expertise in at least two of the following areas: formal ontology, philosophy of biology, logic, medicine, biology, computer science. The position is for an initial period of one year with the possibility of extension. The successful applicant will be required to live in Saarbrücken.

The following requirements have to be met by candidates:
- Project leader: PhD in computational or life science, strong publication track record, project management experience.
- PostDoc: PhD in computational or life science, strong publication track record
- PreDoc: Master in computational or life science, experience relevant for project
- Software architect: Profound programming skills in Java, distributed computing, design patterns, server programming
- Web programmer: Profound programming skills in Java, MySQL, Cocoon, Tomcat, Apache
Dresden is a beautiful City in the East of Germany. Known as "Florence on the river Elbe" it boasts an old town with famous buildings such as the Semper Opera, the Frauenkirche and the Zwinger. Dresden has a rich cultural life with an opera, theatre, and concert hall. The standard of living is high with good schools (including international kindergarden and school) and medical services, as well as beautiful surrounding countryside known as "Saxon Switzerland".
Applications in English including curriculum vitae, list of publications (for scientific positions only), and addresses (including email and telephone) of at least two references should be submitted until 31 January 2005 by email to: ms@biotec.tu-dresden.de.
Research Fellowship in FOUNDATIONAL ONTOLOGY FOR GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION
A post is available in the School of Computing, University of Leeds, for a fixed term of two years, to work on an EPSRC grant entitled Foundational Ontology for Geographic Information recently awarded to Dr Brandon Bennett.
The aim of the project is to develop a formal ontology (i.e. a rigorous specification of concept meanings) that can provide a semantic infrastructure to support flexible processing, querying and integration of geographic information. The approach will be based on a logical representation incorporating additional mechanisms to account for the vagueness that is intrinsic to many geographic concepts.
The successful candidate will work as a member of a diverse research group working on a variety of aspects of spatial knowledge representation and reasoning. The project also involves collaboration with Ordnance survey and with several European ontology research groups. Applicants must have some knowledge of logical representations and be able to apply this to the semantic analysis of natural language concepts. They must be competent in the use of computers, preferably with some programming experience. Good communication skills and the ability to write up research findings for academic publication are essential. Experience of geographic information would be useful but is not necessary.
Information about the School of Computing can be obtained from http://www.comp.leeds.ac.uk and more general information about the University and Leeds is available at http://www.leeds.ac.uk. Salary: up to £26,470 depending on level of experience.
